There are more options than ever before when it comes to fitness. You can find fitness centers, boutique fitness, and more outside your home, and even more options from home. But what is the right workout routine for you? Here are 5 tips to help get you started.
1. Decide on the Frequency and Intensity
The first thing you can do when you are trying to figure out a good workout routine is to consider how often you want to workout, and also the intensity of each of those workouts. If you are a beginner, you shouldn’t start an intense workout program that is 6 days a week for an hour a day. Instead, set a more realistic goal of 3-4 days a week of 20-30 minute workouts.
You should also consider your current schedule, when you can work out, and how long you actually have.
2. Choose Forms of Exercise You Know You Enjoy
Are there certain types of workouts you already do and enjoy? What about a form of fitness you used to do, and haven’t done in a while?
Maybe in college, you really enjoyed playing tennis or running on a treadmill. You might be someone who loves to dance and would like a dance workout, or you are already an avid hiker.
3. Can You Try Something New?
This is also a great time to start incorporating new forms of movement into your workout routine. You really don’t want to do the exact same thing every day, forever. Your body needs variety.
Don’t try a bunch of new forms of movement all at once, but make a list of activities you would like to try out, and try them on at a time.
4. Balance Cardio and Weight Training
As you begin putting together your workout routine, try to add exercises for both cardio and weight training. Some workouts are going to combine both, like kickboxing classes and some weight training classes that include compound movements. But many people like to separate them, so some days you focus on cardio, and others you focus on your weight training.
5. Mix it Up Often
Lastly, make sure you are mixing it up as often as you can. Your body can adjust to the same level of movement, the same workouts, and the same weight. Increase your weight over time and add some variety to your workout plan.
